While Genshin Impact is technically classified as a mobile game, it goes a lot more in-depth than that. There is always content available for players to do, from beginner tips, grinding artifact domains, farming world bosses, or just exploring new regions.
There is a lot of depth related to its combat system as well as the lore, giving players many different options to enjoy the game at any given moment.
With this much to do, it can be overwhelming at times. I remember at one point, I had world, story, and archon quests stacked up because I haven’t played the game in a few days.
As a person who has been playing since October of 2020, I wish I had some sort of guidance at the very beginning to help me progress more smoothly through the game.
Now that I’ve been playing for around 4.5 years, at AR 59, here are some beginner tips in the game that I wish I knew way back at the start.
When you first start the game, you spawn in Starfell Valley and make contact with the Statue of the Seven. Once you progress through the story a little more, you reach the Statue of the Seven at Windrise. At this point you will be able to start collecting these lost oculi.
Each region in Genshin Impact has an oculi that corresponds to the element of that region. For example, the first region available, Mondstadt, is the city of wind and freedom. This means that all the oculi are called “anemoculus” and have the anemo symbol engraved onto each one.
The reason why it is so important to collect these oculi is that they give you very good rewards in the early game, and increase the amount of stamina you can use.
You may think, “why would I need more stamina?”, well, stamina allows you to sprint, climb, and swim a lot more faster and allows you to explore more effectively.
While it may not see much use in the early game, once you start to get to more regions with more complex environments, it becomes more difficult to traverse terrain as the size of cliffs and bodies of water increase.
Just the feeling of being able to sprint, jump, and run around for longer really does make the experience a lot easier and efficient. The amount of times I died from drowning , or falling off cliffs, was so high that I quite literally lost count.
With that in mind, make sure you collect each region’s oculi as you progress in the game to make gameplay easier.
After you play the game for a few days or so, you may realize that outside of finding treasure chests and the occasional in-game mail rewards, there are no other consistent ways to obtain primogems, the main source of currency to wish on character banners.
However, after you reach AR 12 and complete the world quest “Every Day a New Adventure,” you will unlock something called “Daily Commissions.”
Shown as a purple icon the world map, these are basically tasks that reset daily. Ranging from defeating enemies to helping civilians, almost anything can happen, but fear not, they aren’t very difficult and don’t take very long to do.
These can appear anywhere on the world map, however, you can specify a specific region that you want the commissions to spawn in inside the adventurer’s handbook.
4 commissions will spawn everyday, with each one giving you 10 primogems. After completing all four of them, you can go back to any Katheryne in the Adventurer’s Guild to obtain an extra reward of 20 primogems, mora, friendship exp, and character level-up materials.
Of course, besides the number of primogems, the amount of rewards you get from completing all 4 commissions will increase along with your adventure rank and world level.
Totaling 60 primogems daily, it may not seem like much, but continuously completing this will prove useful in the long run. For the best results, it is recommended to log-in daily, completing these commissions at the bare minimum, even if you don’t have time to do any other content.
This ensures you will have a steady flow of primogems during each update, and have something to use in case you ever want to wish.
Consistency is key.
I cannot stress how important doing your commissions is. It should basically be the very first thing you do once you log onto the game.
Once you start playing for a while, it’ll become second nature.
Trust the process.
I honestly cannot stress this enough. ONLY FOCUS ON BUILDING ONE CHARACTER AT A TIME. When I first started playing the game, I decided to spread out my resources for each character that I had thinking it would make my account more balanced, but boy was I wrong.
When you level all your characters equally, it spreads your resources extremely thin. Especially if you invest into mediocre characters in which once you get characters from the gacha, you will immediately stop using them.
Case and point, my first 4-star character was Fischl. She immediately replaced Amber on my team, who I already leveled to 50. All those exp books, mora, and materials just went down the drain. I would never go on to use Amber ever again.
Exp books, weapon enhancement ores, and even mora to some extent are essential for raising the levels of your characters, making them more powerful. You want to invest in one character first, making sure they are at MAX LEVEL and MAX ASCENSION (for your current world level). This goes the same for weapons as they directly help characters increase in power level.
DO NOT try to invest in every character and multiple weapons, particularly weapons that are 3-star and below. Once you start pulling in the gacha, its inevitable that characters will be replaced, and many low rarity weapons will just be used to enhance 4-star and eventually 5-star ones.
Once you get to higher adventure ranks, the amount of resources obtained from events, ley lines, domains, etc., will increase. Then, it becomes more efficient to level more characters.
The official Genshin Impact YouTube channel also offers beginner tips on certain characters. Be sure to check them out when you have time.
Using the primogems obtained from playing the game, you can start wishing on the character banners.
Here I will detail exactly how the gacha system operates. More information can also be found on Genshin Impact’s Official Page.
The gacha system is split into two main categories. The standard banner titled “Wanderlust Invocation,” the limited-time character banners, and the limited-time weapon banners titled “Epitome Invocation.” There is also a banner titled “Beginner’s Wish” for new players to wish on.
For all banners, their is an option for to do a single pull or a ten pull. The beginner’s wish banner is the exception, only offering an eight pull. Additionally, the beginner’s banner can only be wished on 20 times. After you reach this amount, the banner will disappear.
To wish on the standard banner you need acquaint fates (the blue stars) and to wish on everything else, you need the intertwined fates (the multi-colored stars). Each wish costs 160 primogems.
To wish on the standard banner you need acquaint fates (the blue stars) and to wish on everything else, you need the intertwined fates (the multi-colored stars). Each wish costs 160 primogems.
The limited-time character and weapon banners rotate every 3 weeks based on the new characters and regions in the current update while the standard banner has a set number of weapons and characters with no time limit. All the limited-time character banners have drop rate boosts for 3 four-star characters.
Genshin Impact operates on a unique pity system where you are guaranteed a five-star character or weapon after a certain amount of pulls. For the limited time character banners, a 5-star character is guaranteed after 90 pulls, but it might not be the 5-star advertised on the banner.
The first five-star character you get has a 50% chance to be the limited-time character while the other 50% is a five-star character from the standard banner. If you don’t receive the limited-time character the first time, the next time you get a 5-star character, it is guaranteed to be the limited-time character.
The weapon banner works similarly, however, a 5-star weapon is guaranteed within 80 pulls. On the wishing tab, there is a small button called “Epitomized Path.”
This allows you to choose which weapon to build your pity for. If you don’t receive your desired weapon chosen on the epitomized path two times in a row, the third time is guaranteed to be the weapon chosen. This counter is reset every time the banner rotates.
Beginner Tip: The standard banner operates on the same pity system as the limited-time character banners. The only exception is that you can obtain both 5-star characters and weapons within 90 pulls. This makes it slightly more difficult to obtain a specific character or item, as they are all put into one prize pool.
You are also guaranteed a four-star item within 10-pulls on any banner.
Another Beginner Tip: Is NOT recommended to pull on a banner specifically for a 4-star star character, especially if you don’t want the 5-star character.
Wishing on any banner gives starglitter and stardust. Players receive 15 stardust for getting any 3-star item, 2 starglitter for getting a duplicate 4-star item/character, and 10 starglitter for getting a duplicate 5-star character/weapon.
For those that maxed out a 4-star character’s constellation (C6), receiving another copy will yield 5 starglitter. For those that maxed out a 5-star character’s constellation (C6), receiving another copy will yield 25 starglitter.
It is NOT worth it to buy anything in the shop unless it’s additional wishes or select character constellations. Specifically, do not buy acquaint fates using primogems, acquire them from ascending characters as well as battle pass rewards. Only spend primogems to get intertwined fates.
Most of the weapons offered are not very good, and only exist as stat sticks with no real benefit to the active character. All materials can just be farmed in the overworld and should not be bought with starglitter/stardust.
ALWAYS spend your monthly 375 stardust to buy the intertwined fates. Only buy the acquaint fates if you have extra stardust to spare.
In Genshin Impact, materials are of utmost important. Whether it be exp books, food items, boss materials, etc., they all play an important role in progressing through the game.
One roadblock I faced as a newbie in Genshin was the fact that I never had enough materials to level up my characters. Whenever, I pulled a new character from the gacha, I always had to spend so much extra time trying to find the materials for these characters and farming the boss drops.
Adding to the fact that many talent book and weapon ascension domains had specific days on which a character’s materials would be available, it could take upwards of 2-3 weeks just to build one character.
My advice? Collect and save as you go. Whenever you see an item lying around in the overworld, be it food, materials, mob drops, take them. Even more important, the consumables received in the early game. Especially the fragile resins. Those are extremely rare once you proceed into the end game, and help you farm for artifacts once you reach later adventure ranks.
It is not recommended to use fragile resins on anything else except leylines. Until you reach AR 45, don’t farm artifact domains. You will end up with mediocre stats and end up using them for enhancement material later.
Another major thing I discovered, was that Genshin Impact had a dedicated community. For example, the Genshin Wiki has the most up-to-date information on the latest updates, characters, and leaks.
When I want to farm for a new character, I see what materials, talent books, etc. that character needs before farming. This ensures I don’t have to spend extra time to build these characters after they release in-game.
And that’s it!
Note: This from my personal experience as a player. This is not intended to be the sole guide to progress through this game.
